Mountain Biking

By Jordan Kwong

Picture this: You’re sitting at the top of a rugged trail in Santa Cruz, the crisp Pacific breeze stinging your cheeks as the redwood aromas fill the air. Below, miles of singletrack weave through the towering trees and the fern-covered forest floor. The sun shimmers through the canopy, casting curtains of light before your eyes.

You drop in. Gravity takes control as your bike hums beneath you. The air rushes past your face as you sink into a berm, the tires carving hard. Every root and rock pushes your bike upward as you traverse the trail. Behind every corner is an unknown path, ready for you to ride faster.

This is mountain biking – my hobby. Nothing else in the world gives me the same adrenaline and excitement as mountain biking. I’ve been on a bike since I was 5, but mountain biking truly captured my heart at 11. Over the years, the hobby has sharpened my focus and enhanced my decision-making. Whether navigating a tight switchback, anticipating a drop, or adjusting my stance during tricky terrain, mountain biking keeps both my mind and body engaged.

On the trail, I am grounded yet exhilarated. The stresses of life fade away with every pedalstroke. For me, mountain biking is more than just a pastime; it is a way to challenge myself, connect with nature, and experience freedom like no other.
