A Letter To Rice

By Sophie Tuan

My dearest carb,

Your smooth, pointed grains flow seamlessly into the rice cooker bowl as you are dunked, rinsed, and washed until you’re squeaky clean, with no more icky starch water in sight. Beep beep beep, my mouth waters as I anticipate the dreamy rice about to emerge from a cloud of steam, an angel emerging from beyond the clouds.

Of all the delicious carbs in the world, you are simply the best. Your fluffy texture, soft cream color, and light taste are the heart of my food daydreams. The way you pair so effortlessly with any dish, from eggs and tomatoes, to tofu and beef, you simply elevate all other foods with merely your presence. Not only are you a great food partner, but you also shine alone. Simply drizzled with soy sauce or sesame oil, you are the perfect snack that has my mouth salivating at the thought.

Oh rice, without you, no meal is complete; you must accompany my noodles, salads, soups, and everything in between. In the world of carbs, you have no equal;, no competitor matches your elegance nor your timelessness. You can go with anything while also dazzling solo. You are my favorite form of sustenance. Having accompanied me throughout my childhood, staring at me from atop your throne of Cchina during every meal,; you have seen my highest of highs and my lowest of lows. I have healed in your comfort and celebrated with you cradled in my spoon.

From the bottom of my heart (and stomach), rice, you are the best.

Keep calm and carb on,

Sophie Tuan
