Athlete of the Issue: Terrific Taylor Cusick

By Hailey Kearns

Taylor Cusick is an inspiration on and off the court. Besides playing basketball for Westmont, Taylor also partakes in LIFE crew, club basketball, and other various clubs on campus. Outside of school, you will most likely find Taylor diligently completing her homework, hanging out with her friends/family, and enjoying nature with Jolie Briseno. Taylor is an extremely hard worker and always puts full effort into every activity she does. As a captain this year for the Westmont girls basketball team, she hopes to make this season memorable for everyone. Truly, Taylor is one of a kind.

When did you start playing basketball?

I mostly started playing in sixth grade, but I played a little in elementary school, too.

What position do you play?

I play both as a power forward (4) and a center (5).

What is your pre-game/post-game meal?

After games, I’m almost always craving something sugary, but I’m also usually pretty hungry. I try to make protein smoothies so I have something sweet as well as a snack.

Favorite hype-song?

I always seem to have a different hype-song, but usually I listen to things like “Hot” (by Young Thug, Travis Scott, Gunna), “Look Alive” (by BlocBoy JB, Drake), and “Love Sosa” (by Chief Keef).

What is your favorite memory from basketball?

My favorite basketball memories are always from travel tournaments. When I went to the summer UCSB trip for the summer season, I got to share a room with two other teammates, as we had dragged all the beds into one room of the two-room dorm. It’s so fun spending time with everyone on these trips and learning more about my teammates!

What are you most looking forward to this season?

For this season, I’m most looking forward to improving more and getting even closer to my teammates!

What advice would you give to other inspiring youth basketball players?

For aspiring players, my best advice is that you get what you put in. All the time you dedicate to the sport and all the effort you put in matters immensely, and you’ll get visible results from this work. Also, make sure to have fun! forming connections with teammates and enjoying the game itself are so important and help create a stronger team!
