Cats are Purrfect

By Delaney Pound

Over the years, there has been a dividing debate between two groups: cat and dog people. In every argument, each side inevitably chooses the side of whichever pet they happen to own. In my case, I own both cats and dogs, and love them all the same. However, cats are superior.

First of all, cats are much easier to take care of than dogs are. My two dogs require a walk everyday or they go insane inside the house all day. Alternatively, my outdoor cat, Willow, exercises herself, coming and going as she pleases. Additionally, my two kittens, Copper and Pickles, tire themselves out by playing with each other in the wee hours of the morning. According to many studies, cats require much less time and commitment than dogs do, which makes them more accessible to people with less time on their hands. Of course, cats do require affection to be happy and healthy, but for the most part, they are self-sufficient. Not only are they accessible to people who are busy, but they are also available to people who cannot afford dogs. Especially having an outdoor cat, the only expenses are their food and water, but having an indoor cat is not much different. Indoor cats need food, water, litter, a litter box, and in some cases, treats and toys. Dogs, on the other hand, need food, water, treats, dog-bags, toys that often need to be replaced, and lots of attention. Not to mention, adoption fees tend to be more expensive for dogs and puppies compared to cats and kittens. County of Santa Clara Animal Services states that the average adoption fee for dogs is around $110 and puppies are $120, while the average fee for cats is $90 and kittens are around $100. Surprisingly, cats are also proven to be beneficial for their owners’ health. Brownsburg Animal Clinics article says, “According to HABRI, ‘…Cat ownership can reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and improve heart health, alleviate social isolation and loneliness, and reduce stress.” Not only are cats super cute and cuddly, they benefit their owner’s physical and mental health, too.

Overall, cats are an amazing pet to have. They are independent, loving, and smart creatures that have many favorable qualities to them. Although cats are arguably better pets than dogs, dogs are also fantastic pets that have their own strengths and weaknesses. If you are looking for a companion that is low(er) effort, less expensive, and even healthy to own, cats are the way to go!
