Matcha: Does it Really Taste Like Grass?

By Joseph Nian

Recently, my friends and I were on a call fooling around while procrastinating on homework. Suddenly one of them had to leave to make her usual matcha drink and I responded, “How do you like matcha, I feel like it tastes like grass.” Let’s just say some not nice words were directed towards me after that comment.

So to settle the debate once and for all, I brought along some of my friends to Izumi matcha located in Cupertino. Known for its spectacular matcha flavor (according to my friends and peers), I thought Izumi matcha would be a great fit to settle the matcha debate once and for all. As shown in the picture above, I got a matcha soft serve while another friend got a matcha drink.

The soft serve was fantastic… in its texture. The matcha flavoring along with the matcha powder on top of the creamy ice cream was just too much for me. I even tried some bites without the strong matcha powder top, and the matcha flavor was just not it for me. Call me a cow or whatever, but I will not back down on the fact that matcha items just taste like grass.

Although my friends may severely disapprove of my taste buds, I think matcha just is not for me. So say what you want about me, but it’s not like I can change anything about my personal preferences for food., I think this can be applied to other aimless arguments over food like pineapple on pizza, guacamole with donuts, etc. Let’s just enjoy our food in peace.
