In homes across the world, mealtime is more than just a time to eat. It’s a gathering that bonds families together, creating moments of connection amongst the busyness of daily life. When the extended Crowley family gets together, traveling from homes scattered all over the West Coast, we always celebrate with a pre-meal prayer. The prayer, which is more of a song, is a beloved family tradition. It started as an ordinary expression of gratitude, spiritual reflection, and love, but has since become associated with years of good memories and meaning. Any of my friends who have witnessed the Crowley family rendition of the Johnny Appleseed song understand its significance. Before the first fork hits the plate, we all pause and assemble, holding hands in a circle surrounding the food. The sounds of squealing little cousins disappear and a sense of calm settles over the table. Grandma and Grandpa usually say a few words and then grace begins.
The start of the song is the most important. One lucky person, traditionally the youngest child in attendance, is selected to lead the family in harmony by saying the first-word “ohhhh.” It is important to hit this first note at the perfect pitch as it sets the tone for the entire rest of the song. On one rare occasion, during a family reunion in Oregon, my uncle Kevin was regretfully bestowed with this crucial duty. When the first peep came out of his mouth, a loud ugly voice crack sent him into a spiral of high and low-pitch changes. Everyone tried their best to keep up with the prayer but we all broke into an intense fit of laughter. Even the family dog chimed in, barking with excitement! It was one of those unforgettable family moments that added to the meaning behind our family’s pre-meal ritual.
The Crowley Family Prayer (Johnny Appleseed song):
Ohhhhhh,
The lords been good to me,
And so I thank the lord,
For giving me,
The things I need,
The sun and the rain and the appleseed,
The lords been good to me.
Amen, amen
Amen, amen, amen,
AMEN!
