Midseason Momentum

By Madeline Crowley

Already halfway through the season, Westmont girls field hockey season is flying by. Their record is currently 4 wins and 4 losses, all of the wins being preseason games and losses being regular season games. Clearly, Westmont is in a difficult league facing skilled opponents like Leigh, Gilroy, and Christopher High School. In order to withhold the dominant offenses of their league opponents, coach Taylor Casillas has made strategic shifts to the teams field formation. Now, 4 defenders and 4 midfielders take the field with only two forwards placed at the top. Senior Captain Lily Bourne notes, “ If there’s any team in the league that I want to beat it is Branham” as the team suffered a very close loss to them only 1-0 and wants revenge. The team has also continued their tradition of “secret sister” buddies this season. Each home game, pairs of one JV and one Varsity player bring each other a little gift to exchange. It is an opportunity for the varsity players to mentor their JV counterparts and provide them insight as to how they can improve their game. Many of the girls enjoy this tradition as it allows them to make meaningful bonds. On October 29th the girls will play their last home game of the season against Gilroy High School for senior night. Make sure to come watch starting at 6 pm in the bowl!
