A Factually Correct PJO Tier List

By Mia Hanuska

I’m a huuuuge Percy Jackson fan. I’ve got the books, the shirts, watched the show—everything. I’d say I’m a fairly reliable person for the very difficult task of tier ranking all the characters, and with no bias, of course. I’m only including characters from the first series because there’s too many to do all of them at once.

S Tier: Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson, Sally Jackson, Will Solace

Annabeth Chase and Percy Jackson are clear S-tier characters, and although they are the stereotypical choices, they have always been my favorite characters. Both are incredibly likable, have great personalities, and they’re just the absolute cutest couple. I’ve shipped them since the first book. Sally Jackson is too sweet to not be S-tier, she has always been supportive of Percy and her ambition to become an author makes her a great role model. As for Will, I just can’t dislike him. Especially in the later books, he’s incredibly sweet to his partner (no spoilers as to who it is) and helps Apollo greatly in the Trials of Apollo series.

A Tier: Grover Underwood, Charles Beckendorf, Tyson, Calypso, Chiron, Thalia Grace

These are characters I really like, but not enough to be a huge fan of. Tyson and Grover are part of the four protagonists; I can’t just dislike them. Calypso I’ve always been jealous of, her island sounded so nice and exactly what young Mia wanted for her future life. Charles and Thalia helped save the camp, so a massive win there. And Chiron, well, he’s Chiron.

B Tier: Nico Di Angelo, Bianca Di Angelo, Clarisse La Rue, Zoë Nightshade

While I feel Nico deserves a higher ranking for his actions in the future books, these are based mainly off Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where he plays an antihero role. During my first few readings of the books, I did not like him—he’s moody, depressed, and hates Percy, which although I can understand due to his past, I didn’t like. As for his sister, Bianca wasn’t in enough of the book for me to get a full impression of her. Clarisse and Zoë…look I know they changed towards the end of the series, but they were also so mean to my beloved characters for the majority of the books. I can’t fully forgive them for that.

C Tier: Juniper, Travis & Conner Stroll

Nothing against these characters, they simply didn’t have a lasting impression on me. I like Juniper for Grover; I think they’re cute together. And Travis and Conner, they’re okay I suppose. Not much to say about them.

D Tier: Ethan Nakamura, Selena Beauregard, Luke Castellan

No one can change my mind on these characters. Nuh uh. I extremely dislike them, despite knowing their backstories. Okay, okay, Luke and Selena did the right thing at the end of the series. So what? If it hadn’t been for them the whole Kronos thing wouldn’t have gotten so bad. Also, Luke’s relationship with Annabeth always makes me feel…weird. He’s 23, she’s 16/17…that’s a little odd to me. I see the brother-sister relationship, but it’s always felt romantic and not just because of Annabeth’s admiration of him. As for Ethan, I just dislike him because he used his godly parent as an excuse for supporting Kronos and wouldn’t accept that he was wrong. True D tier characters.
