As I sat on the living room couch on a boiling summer day rigorously searching for my next Netflix series to binge, I stumbled upon an oddly simplistic title with six graphically stirring letters and the bizarre grin of a man. Intrigued by the man’s mysterious nature and uncomforting smile, I gave the show a chance. Little did I know I was on the brink of discovering the most illustrative and alluring TV show on Netflix: Dexter.
Dexter Morgan, the lead blood spatter analyst at the Miami Metro Police Department, appears to lead a modest life with a romantic partner and two step-children, yet not one person alive is aware of the dark secret he hides from society. Prudently, Dexter unleashes his urge to kill through the character he calls the dark passenger. Dexter’s parallel lifestyle and evil derive from his horrifying childhood experience where he witnessed his mother’s brutal murder and the simultaneous birth of his psychologically dark passenger. Dexter, taken in and adopted by Officer Harry Morgan, officially becomes part of a relatively stable family. After some years of developing a strong bond with his adoptive father, Dexter reveals to Harry that he occasionally feels a sudden urge to kill. Harry, obsessed with obtaining justice, establishes rules to help Dexter embrace his urge and divert it to rid the world of culpable criminals whom the justice system did not appropriately punish. These rules become Dexter’s lifeline as he continuously reverts to them through the many dilemmas he faces.
Perceiving himself as a monster that will never be normal, Dexter struggles with balancing his fraudulent life and his unforgiving craving to put people to death. The Netflix series perfectly contrasts the repercussions and consequences of the delicate infrastructure behind Dexter’s separate personalities that would end with chaotic outcomes if they ever intertwined. Though Dexter, a precise and neat individual, understands the intricacy, his selfishness results in his unintentional stubbornness.
Dexter amazingly keeps viewers engaged and constantly keeps you at the edge of your seat thinking, “How will he get out of this?” With a raveled plot including elements that significantly contribute to the plot, the hit Netflix TV series sucks viewers into Dexter’s universe and requires you to unravel many twisted mysteries. Dexter emits an uncomforting yet addicting vibe that will surely have you chilled. Perfect for a halloween atmosphere. So the next time you’re wondering what to watch next give Dexter a try.
