More than Just Maple Syrup

By Sadie York

2 hours north from Vancouver, Canada, lies the small, but bustling village of Whistler. Home to one of the largest ski resorts in North America, Whistler is most famous for its challenging slopes, which were used in the 2010 Winter Olympics. However, winter isn’t the only time to get the best experience out of Whistler. I visited the mountain resort this previous summer, and it was an amazing experience–even without the snow. When it isn’t ski season, the lifts and courses are cleverly utilized for mountain biking. Whistler offers extensive wood and hills for bikers to come and ride through for the entire day. However, if biking isn’t your thing, no worries! There’s a huge assortment of activities that can be done in and out of the village, which are all run by the Whistler activity group.

While my family and I only visited for a week, we were able to fill all our days with fun and get the most out of the experience. It may appear as an outdoors-oriented place, but if that isn’t appealing to you, there’s so many additional activities which you can do from the comfort of inside the village. For reference, while my dad and I were ziplining through the gorgeously green mountains, my mom and sister were able to book an appointment and relax with massages. Within the village, there are dozens of restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores to choose from. We personally never had to leave the village for food, and were satisfied with every meal.

Now, if you were to ask me what the best aspect of this trip was, I would respond with the views immediately. One thing I can never get used to when traveling out of state to locations such as Oregon, Washington, and Colorado, is how green the landscapes are. Whistler was no exception to this. I was genuinely in awe of how painting-esque every single view was. From the mountain ranges to blue lakes, waterfalls, and scenic hikes, Whistler definitely claimed a special place in my heart.

Prior to my summer vacation, I never had any interest in visiting Canada, I mean, it seemed like such a boring place to go out of the country. However, I certainly proved myself wrong, and whether you’re a fan of winter sports, outdoor activities, or simply want to stay in a robe all day at a resort, Whistler is the place to go!
