The Fire in You

By Delaney Pound

Is there a fire in you? During the school year, Westmont offers a wide variety of activities during and after school. Some people are in ASB, LIFE Crew, or journalism.  Others play sports, do theater, or run/attend clubs at lunch. Whether you have been involved in an activity for a few days or a few years, you’ll most likely enjoy it. Unfortunately, many high school students don’t participate in the vast options of activities Westmont provides. Every student who has time and is otherwise able to be involved with our school definitely should. For me, I do a lot of extracurriculars for school, specifically, ASB, LIFE Crew, FFA, field hockey, and softball. I can truly say that doing these things while attending Westmont has made me a much happier and more outgoing person.

In middle school, I was often perceived as very introverted, but now that I am in my sophomore year, I’m the exact opposite of that. High school is truly the time of every person’s life when they are able to try new things and challenge themselves. Many people start off their high school experience by choosing safe options for them. For example, I chose my classes based on the ones my friends Emily Hou and Jensen Oderio were taking. Due to my choices, I happened to know a few of my classmates, but I inevitably didn’t know the majority of them. By the end of the year, I had spoken to dozens of new people and made so many new friends, just from my classes alone. This year, I decided to branch out of my comfort zone and choose my classes based on my wants and needs. I’m super excited to meet new people and make new friends, and if you give it a shot, you will too. Most people have the means to find something they are passionate about, but not too many find what ignites a fire in them. Often, people commit to an endeavor they don’t genuinely love just to make others happy. Devoting time and effort to those kinds of pursuits is pointless and a waste of time.

Life does not last forever, so why spend precious minutes being unhappy? Passion is so important because it makes your efforts more enjoyable and satisfying overall. From my experience of jumping into new situations, I have learned so much about myself. Put yourself out there so you can spark the fire inside of you too.
