The Anti-War Movement Spreads as Far as Mexico

By Valerie Garcia-Vallejo

As many plead for the ceasefire of the Palestinian and Israeli war, there has been solidarity and pleas mostly in universities, but the most recent and shocking news is the support of Mexican students. As known, Mexico announced its solidarity with Israel in October of 2023. As well, the United States has been providing support and sparking controversies as many do not agree with the funding of a war. Here in the United States, students protest on university campuses, but these protests have reached further into other countries. In Mexico, university students attending one of Mexico’s most prestigious universities, “La Universidad Autónoma de México,” have been protesting their country’s decision to stand with Israel and, like students in the United States, plead for a ceasefire. Not only has solidarity for Palestine reached Mexican universities, but it has also reached the entire country.

Polanco, a heavily populated Jewish city and one of  Mexico City’s most famous neighborhoods, protest the war and questioned what the country was doing. Having brought together many Jews who are willing to speak up on the conflict and choose to end the apartheid is one of the most important events to have happened in Mexico this month. On May 16, 2024, the neighborhood took into their own hands to honor the Nakba of 1948, an event in which many Palestinians were persecuted during the very first years of war with Israel. The Polanco metro station honored the event by gathering many together, and naming the station “Palestine”.

As Mexican students and all who are influenced by the movements they are creating continue to push for a ceasefire, there is a hope that the government will get involved and respond in a positive manner. As more anti-war protests break out, it is important to acknowledge the bravery of those who fight peacefully each day for all who are affected by the conflict on both sides.
