Hash-N-Dash

By Diego Mantelli

If anyone has been on Instagram recently, and is any bit a foodie, more likely than not they’ve stumbled upon something from Hash-N-Dash. Videos of smash burgers of sausage sizzling on a flat top, stationed underneath a pop-up tent, next to perfect circular eggs frying in golden goodness. After a recent move to the Rec Room in downtown San Jose, Hash-N-Dash has greatly expanded their production, selling sandwiches and burgers every day without fail. Whenever anyone is doing pop-ups, some people get nervous with the risk of food poisoning, and as such, I tried so you wouldn’t have to.

In order to get there before there was too long of a line, I decided to get there as early as possible, leaving my house at the ungodly hour of 7:15 am to beat the crowds. Sure enough, there was already a line when I got there, but luckily it went by quickly. Before long, I got my eyes, and hands, on a breakfast sandwich, add jalapenos, and let me just preface, it was delicious. I’ve had a lot of breakfast sandwiches, but very few have come close to this one. The crunch of the english muffin, paired with the smashed sausage patty, set this sandwich apart. The millard reaction elevates the sausage, which is almost always the dull point of the sandwich. The added acidity of the grilled onions, combined with the bite of the jalapenos, changed the egg from meh to the next level.

If you ever have nothing to do, or even very little to do while near downtown SJ, I highly recommend swinging by and picking up a sandwich, you won’t regret it.
