April Fool’s Freaky Foods

By Cat Kemp

Waking up on April first as a child to the dawning realization that it was April Fools’ Day filled me with an unmatched excitement. Stepping out of bed, I would be greeted with my mom freaking out that we were late! Only to realize it was the first of many jests of the day. After the initial fright, we would move on to breakfast, where without fail we would start the day with an “egg” made of yogurt egg-whites and a canned peach yolk. Although I am sure I, as a devious child, participated in many pranks, the most memorable for me were always the whimsical foods. Therefore, if you want to prank someone this April Fools’ Day, try out some of these crazy recipes!

  1. Eggs

Previously mentioned, this simple prank will start the day off with a kick! Simply dollop some white yogurt—plain or vanilla—in a bowl or plate, and add half of a canned peach to the center to make it look like a sunny side up egg. To make it more believable, serve it as the recipient is already sitting and ready to eat so they have less time to inspect the dish.

  1. Berry Juice

Ideally after a workout or some kind of labor to make the person extra thirsty, serve this berry ‘juice’ to make someone really frustrated! In advance, make some cherry or strawberry jello and place it into a cup. Add a straw while the mixture is still cooling so that it does not disrupt the appearance of the jello. Provide it to a thirsty friend and watch as they can’t suck any of the delicious juice up!

  1. Cupcakes for dinner

Wanna make a fun surprise? Try out these dinner cupcakes. Prepare your favorite meatloaf or stuffing in a cupcake pan lined with (preferably) cute cupcake wrappers. While those cook, make some mashed potatoes; instant, microwave, or by hand, it’s up to you. Then, place the mashed potatoes in a piping bag or a ziplock baggie with the corner cut off. When the meatloaf/stuffing is done, pipe the mashed potatoes on top to look like delectable frosting. Ideally, you should cover the entire top of the ‘cupcake’ so that the savory filling isn’t noticeable. Although the recipient might have a clue from the smell, these delicious cupcakes are sure to garner surprise!

  1. Onion Rings

This prank, although more believable than the rest in my opinion, takes arguably the most time and patience. Start with Twizzlers pull and peel candies, some white chocolate melts, and gram crackers. Take the Twizzlers apart and carefully shape them into a circle, this is the hard part so be patient if it doesn’t work out right away! Once you have your rings, prepare the gram crackers by mashing them into crumbs and placing them in a bowl. Then, melt your white chocolate in a bowl using 30 second intervals in the microwave. To make the melting process easier and allow the chocolate to harden faster on the rings, you can add a spoonful of coconut oil to the chocolate. Then, chicken coating style, dip a ring into the chocolate, quickly followed by dipping and completely coating them in gram cracker crumbs, then set aside to cool. Repeat with all rings. Boom! You have yourself realistic-looking ‘onion rings’ to feed to someone in need of a pranking!

  1. Grilled Cheese

Possibly after cupcakes for dinner, follow up with this grilled cheese treat! You will need a white/vanilla pound cake and yellowy-orange frosting. Cut the pound cake in half to create two slices of ‘bread.’ If you want to go above and beyond, toast the ‘bread’ lightly on a pan with some butter. Then, layer the non-toasted side of both slices of the bread with a generous layer of frosting. Stack them together to reveal a delicious looking and tasting ‘grilled cheese!’
