Women Deserve Better.

By Nadia Rivas

Time and time again, society has been prone to pinning women against each other on social media and in everyday aspects. For example, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, recently at the Grammys, Swift invited Rey up on stage with her to win the best album, yet people still try to depict the interaction as  “beef” as if Swift was trying to humiliate Rey. This is one of the many examples of women getting pinned against each other, but why is it always women and why do we collectively always get pinned against one another? We all know social media is filled with mindless drama solely about getting likes and clicks. But we need to take a step back and contemplate, “What’s going on here?”

We as a society have been conditioned to believe women are incapable of achieving greatness and are constantly trying to step one up. That is further from the truth. But unfortunately, it has turned into a prophecy that now many women view others as rivals.  Given all the misogyny and sexism in the world, there is no surprise that women are judged harder than men. Social media has created a culture objectifying women by reducing their physical appearance and getting judged for how many men they have dated. It’s no surprise Jacob Elordi is not being judged for dating many women, but when Taylor Swift does it, she is a “slut” and a “whore.” Even if there isn’t a man involved, the media always tries to find ways to create some sort of drama for women. An example would be Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. Cardi used to admire Minaj and look up to her. Still, when Cardi rose to fame, many started staring at the pot and pinning one against another with the question “Who is the better female rapper?” which led to a “feud” they now have. In the many years since the first woman, they have always been talked down to and seen as an object and not as a person. Society and the media are the real problem. They shouldn’t be worried whether this woman did this and this woman is dating them or they’re doing the same things. They should be praised; women have come a long way since the 1900s and should not be pinned against one another. It’s a narrative that many people believe should be wiped away.

Women deserve better and should stop getting pinned against each other.
