Pops Pizza

By Sophia Doan

While driving from San Jose for a relaxing beach trip, or a gorgeous hike in the redwoods, you inevitably pass the Summit. Most people are so focused on the winding roads, a quick nap, or scrolling on Instagram to look up and notice the shocking pizza stop.

North Korean flags flown higher than any other flags they have hanging, signs that brag of North Korean nuclear power, and signs warning you that if you cross the barbed wire, your “life will be at peril”—advertised as “Pops Pizza”, this small shop has many questionable signs and advertisements. Recently, while driving by I noticed a new addition to the many alarming signs. In Arial font, the sign screams, “The great Korean people are a nation that possesses 50 atomic bombs.” So who owns the shop? Why place the shop in the middle of a winding road on the way to the beach? These are questions no one seems to be able to answer.

Reviews online of the pizza shop have entered feeling curious, leaving disappointed and rejected. One person wrote that as soon as they walked in, they were yelled at to “get out get out get out” by the employees (read more of the review here). Rumors of the shop being a weed dispensary, or a human trafficking front have circled the internet, causing a really entertaining discussion (read the comments here).

I had been planning on stopping at the pizza place, to grab a slice and look around (after all their signs advertise that they have the best pizza in town), but after looking for more information online, google has marked their business as “permanently closed.”

Next time you are craving a slice of pizza, or need a place to stretch your legs on the drive to the beach, do not stop at Pops Pizza.
