Economics En Masse

By Mia Hanuska

Seated at the largest table in the middle of Chick-fil-A, the cashiers and other customers hold their ears as I watch as my dinner companions loudly argue over which economic system is best. Adam Smith, founder of laissez-faire capitalism, uses the fact we are dining at a capitalist establishment as proof his system is best. Karl Marx has The Communist Manifesto open with the margins filled with hand-written notes on his own work. He tells the others to look at WWII and the “successes” of the communist parties. Finally, Charlemagne yells in angry German about why everyone needs to revert back to the “good ol’ days” and begin feudalism again. His translator is working overtime trying to decipher what he’s saying through his mouthful of Deluxe Chicken Sandwich. My head whips back and forth, attempting to follow everyone’s wild statements. The camera hidden in my cup of fries gets everything on film to later show my friends. I say nothing but chuckle to myself, having organized this just to see the reactions.
