Nine-Nine

By Averi Halbert and Marina Halbert

Brooklynn Nine-Nine is one of the most comedic and wholesome shows we’ve seen yet (and that’s saying something). Revolving around a police precinct, the Brooklyn 99, features a strong cast, remarkable comedic timing, and heartfelt plotlines that leave you cheering for the characters and their relationships. Unfortunately, one of the cast’s own recently passed, leaving a hole in the heart of the comedic world.

Captain Raymond Holt, played by Andre Braugher, was one of the funniest, most well-developed characters on the show. Turning from a stubborn, unfeeling boss to practically the father of the precinct, Holt made Brooklyn Nine-Nine what it was: a three-dimensional and  superb show.

Andre Braugher was more than an incredible actor. He was a husband to Ami Braugher, the father of three children, and a scholar who attended Stanford University as well as Juilliard. Although he died prematurely, Andre Braugher will live on in our hearts and the character of Captain Holt. Despite his death, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an amazing show, one that deserves a glowing review even in the face of tragedy—and so we will persist.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine features an abundance of diverse characters, from the expressionless yet caring Captain Holt to the immature but sincere Detective Jake Peralta. The show consists mostly of bottle episodes, with each plot emerging over a short 30-minute show. In certain cases, recurring criminals and background characters, like estranged ex-wives, flighty fathers, and delightful dogs appear, weaving a bustling and diverse world as the show’s backdrop. One thing that makes this show so special is its ability to develop every single character in every single episode. For example, although Amy Santiago never fully evolves past her people-pleasing, perfectionist personality, she slowly emerges from her work-centered life, finding unexpected friends and family in the precinct. The acting of every single character is impeccable, from Terry Cruz’s yogurt-obsessed sergeant to Joe Lo Truglio’s foodie detective.

No matter what type of show you like, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will afford you a simple, funny break from reality, as you watch cops genuinely try to improve people’s lives and see a government agency function smoothly. From the Halloween heists to Jake and Amy’s will-they, won’t-they dynamic, this show will capture your heart from start to finish (as long as you skip season 8). Consider binging Brooklyn Nine-Nine next time you’re looking for something to watch, and keep the phenomenal actor behind Captain Holt in your heart as you watch.
