Casiopea: Epic Japanese Funk

By Matthew Etzel

I can’t remember which song is which because all the titles are in Japanese! Don’t let the language barrier discourage you though–epic jams await.

Founded in 1976 by guitarist Issei Noro and bassist Tetsuo Sakurai, Casiopea is no young band. Their music, on the other hand, is timeless. In most of the band’s lifetime, their instrumental jams never took off in the U.S. In recent years, however, thanks to the wonderful and mysterious powers of the internet, more people have discovered this overseas gem.

Honestly, I can’t tell if this band is funk or jazz or more like citypop, but one of their songs is titled “Galactic Funk” so I’m calling it that. My favorite funky song off their self-titled debut album, Casiopea, is Space Road. The drumming on this track is super unique and precise, as is the case in all of their songs.
