Although I am very grateful for many people in my life this year, one stands out in the crowd: my grandfather, Luther Muth. My grandfather is one of the most stubborn, yet kindest individuals I have ever met. I am forever grateful for him and all of the important life lessons, wisdom, and skills that he has so graciously shared with me.
One of my fondest memories with him was when my grandmother, Marjorie Muth, and he visited my family in the summer of 2015. One day, I decided to join my grandparents on a nice afternoon walk around the neighborhood. My grandparents walk at an abnormally brisk pace for their age, so we finished our walk fairly quickly. However, we did not return back to my house empty-handed. During our pleasurable walk, my grandfather spotted a large tree up ahead with peculiar round orange fruits. After a closer inspection, we discovered that the mysterious fruits were grapefruit. My grandparents, not from California (they live in North Battleford, Saskatchewan), were shocked that there was a grapefruit tree only a few blocks away from my house. Overwhelmed by the size and miraculously bright color of the fruit, my grandparents were then determined to accomplish one thing: steal a fruit. Of course, they did not actually steal a fruit, but instead picked two off the ground that had no bruises or cuts and brought them home. When we returned home, they washed the fruit and showed my mother our discovery of the grapefruit from the ground. My mother could not believe that my grandparents not only took the fruit from the ground, but also did it in front of me.
My grandfather will always remain in a special place in my heart. Admiring his strength and determination, I now strive to have the strength that he has. I appreciate him for teaching me how to fish, shell peas, and most importantly, make the most out of life.
