By Weston Kelly and Cat Kemp
Westmont Junior, Bennett Kelly, has always loved music. From playing guitar to drumming in marching band, Kelly has a wide variety of musical abilities. He is also a member of The Table, a garage band started by fellow Westmont students, and plays the drum kit for many of their songs. Not only that, he has participated in marching band and winter percussion throughout high school, making many memories along the way.
Cat: What got you into drumming Bennett?
Bennett: Some friends were in a band and wanted another member so I joined as the drummer
Cat: Does drumming help you express yourself? Or is there any reason you enjoy doing it?
Bennett: For me, it is the most enjoyable way to experience music. I like to drum along to songs in the car because it helps me feel closer to the songs.
Weston: Do you plan to continue drumming throughout high school and maybe college?
Bennett: I will continue to enjoy it as a hobby, but will not join any school activities related to it.
Weston: How was your experience with The Table?
Bennett: It was really fun to be part of a band with a bunch of senior friends and playing in like a garage band was much more enjoyable than playing in a band class.
Cat: Why’s that?
Bennett: We have much more freedom with what we play. Also the drum set is so much more fun than playing snare.
Weston: What is your favorite song from The Table?
Bennett: I liked playing covers of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Check it out on Spotify or Apple Music
Cat: Do you play in your free time?
Bennett: Yeah. I practice along to songs and occasionally
Weston: Anything else you’d like to add?
Bennett: I would recommend getting into music because it is a great way to express yourself and to be creative.
