Women’s Volleyball Team Killin’ it On and Off the Court

By Marina Halbert

This year’s fall sports at Westmont have been extremely successful so far, despite turnovers in coaching and the loss of last year’s seniors. The Women’s Volleyball team is no exception. Boasting 12 players, seven of whom are returning Varsity players, and 3 players who have been on Varsity as long as they’ve been at Westmont (Audrey Jones, Kianna Liggs, and Marina Halbert), the team has a very strong roster. While their record last year was 8-7, the newest iteration of Westmont’s women’s volleyball team hasn’t lost a game yet, and is currently 4-0. The next home game will be Tuesday, September 19 at 7:00, where you can watch team captains Kianna and Audrey lead the team to victory once more. This year the team has had the special opportunity to interview with 49ers Cal-Hi Sports, where they discussed the direction the team is heading and the role of the setters, Rucha Chaven and Orion Chang. You can view the interview at 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Show #2 | September 2, 2023. Under the leadership of head coach Brian Soto last year, the volleyball team went to the quarter finals in CCS where they lost to Monta Vista. As Soto enters his second year as head coach, he has added some new help in the form of Coach June, who also coaches the Men’s Volleyball Team at Westmont. The last time Westmont had a league title was 2013, but the team is hoping to change that this year, with their strengths in hitting (especially on the outside with the help of freshman Alicia Ridell and Kianna), passing (exemplified in Audrey, who plays libero), and blocking (watch Keira DeVita and Siena Bye to see some of the team’s best blocking). Currently, the team dreams of improving their serve-receive, running plays, and utilizing a 5-1 (where there is one setter and five hitters on the court at all times). Come support their journey on September 19 at 7:00!
