So Scarlet

By Keira De Vita

The best thing about the color red is the fact that Taylor Swift has an entire album named RED, but more importantly, her song, “Maroon” from Midnights which encapsulates everything perfectly imperfect about this color. Manifesting the end of something strong through rusted telephones and dust covered surfaces; a story of untelling and unpredictable love that leads to small moments of “laughing with my feet in your lap” overtaken by a feeling of undying love, that, in the moment feels perdurable, to “sobbing with your head in your hands.” The meaning of the song delves into both the good and bad of relationships as the song progresses to a fall out of love as red begins to exist, not as perfect and eternal as it appeared prior. There stands a period of losing track of time “again” oblivious to the change to come as love quickly falls as “lips I used to call home, so scarlet” illuminates the quick path undying love carves that contrast to the beginnings of the eternal relationship. Maroon is perfectly imperfect, making it seamlessly effective; crafted to call to the ones broken by a dying love.
