Billowing Bottoms

By Collin Murray

Everyone always asks me, “Collin, why do you wear such big pants?”. I’ve heard people who don’t know my name simply refer to me as “the kid with the big pants”. I’m here to tell you: oversized, baggy trousers are not only objectively stylish, but more beneficial than one might think.

First of all, you need to know what to look for in order to get the correct type and amount of bag. The first thing I look for in pants is the waist size. I prefer a size 36 and up, typically 38. This is where the wideness begins. Next, is leg opening. You can have pants with a size 44 waist, but with a small leg opening, they’ll just look weird and disproportionate. For leg openings, I look for around ten inches. Not small enough for a crazy taper in the leg, but not so big that I’ll be tripping all over them. If you really want to get deep into the weeds, you want to look at the “rise” of the pants, this is the distance between the waistband and the crotch seam in between the legs.

The main reason I wear britches so large is style. I believe they look good and are very versatile, working with most shoes and tops. Extra-large denim also comes with many advantages, though. First of all, range of motion. I will never be restricted by my pants when running or jumping, meaning I’m ready to move at a second’s notice. I may trip over them, but in that case, I just hold them up like a princess holding her gown walking down a flight of stairs. Next, is pocket room. With large pants, come large pockets. I can hold anything and everything in my pockets. Everyday necessities like phone, wallet, keys? Got ‘em on me. Apple to snack on later? In my pocket. Water bottle or canned beverage? Back pocket. The final thought I will leave you with is the fact that I don’t need to worry about finding “the right size” pants when shopping. I already know they’re the wrong size, but that’s what I’m looking for. I don’t need to try them on, I know they won’t fit. But with a belt and some folding at the hips, they will.

If this list wasn’t enough to convince you to up your bag levels, then you’ll just have to see for yourself. Go to the nearest Goodwill, pick a pair out, and try them on. I promise you will not be disappointed.
