William Sanford Nye was “that guy” for many of us high schoolers. He was that “science guy.” Through his humorous, educational, and creative television show, Bill Nye the Science Guy, the American science educator and mechanical engineer inspired millions of viewers worldwide. Nye, who is unquestionably the best science educator of our time, introduced young viewers to this amazing and almost mystical world by making science accessible, thrilling, and enjoyable. Although the iconic opening jingle is the first thing that pops into my head when Bill Nye is mentioned, many of his lessons are still ingrained into my mind. I still remember the continuous cutting of a block of cheese to show his audience how small an atom is, or the use of a soccer field to show us how big the solar system really is. Thus, I must extend my thanks to Mr. Nye, for his iconic show. His passion for science transferred to me at a young age and helped me come to love science, and learning in general. I am certain if Bill Nye was my AP Physics teacher, I would at least be passing the class.
