Feeling Fortunate for Four Square

By Emily Burich

Think back to elementary school and it’s time for recess.  Kids are all running toward the same activity: four square.  Four square is very popular for a plethora of reasons.  The game creates an intense competition which intrigued our young childhood minds.  Four square isn’t just popular at school; kids play it at summer camps, with their friends at home, and even at some parks.  The game is easy to play and requires almost no equipment.  All you need is a flat, hard surface and a ball.  The rules of four square are simple.  If the ball bounces in your square, you must hit the ball after it’s bounced only once.  Upon hitting the ball, you must hit it into another person’s square.  If you hit it out of bounds or after multiple bounces, you’re out.  Getting out means walking to the very end of the dreaded, prolonged line, waiting what feels like hours to come back in.  Four square became such a huge activity that there is now a tournament in Bridgton, Maine every winter.  This tournament has been taking place for almost 20 years.  Next time you’re looking for a game to play, take a trip down memory lane and play four square!
