The smell, the restlessness. The rainbow carpet squares were easily the most impactful part of my elementary school career. At my elementary school, up until fourth grade, the large carpet divided up into squares was used in everyday learning. Mostly in kindergarten, all 16 5-year-olds sat on the carpet all day, everyday. As the work tables collected dust, the carpet—slowly fading with every activity—gained stains with memories of the little kids who learned to count with marbles. Although the wear was visible, the colors of the squares remain vivid in my mind: my memory of my childhood. I mainly have my olfactory sense to thank– specific smells can remind me of my classroom, which brings me right back to the biggest part in my childhood.
