Fitness 19

By Sophia Christensen

As the clock strikes 2:39, I immediately begin rushing to the student parking lot with one thing in mind: Fitness 19. Thoughts of stress scramble around in my mind with the knowledge that if I get into the gym any later than 3:30, every machine will be taken, and the crowded room will make me feel claustrophobic. The rush especially kicks in when I go to the gym with Senior Lindsay Der, as we consistently take at least 2 hours there, ending around 5:00—at which time there’s seriously no hope in landing a machine. Regardless of how busy it can sometimes get, the gym is a great escape and hobby to have. I’ve only been going consecutively for around four months, but I am so grateful that I have developed a habit for myself of making the gym absolutely mandatory. Sport-less and anxious throughout my senior year, the gym has really helped my overall health and confidence. Going up in weight every week or two allows me to feel like I’m getting stronger, and it is truly addicting. The community at the gym is also what keeps me coming back every day. The atmosphere is full of positivity, and even the workers have been making more of an effort to get to know the gym rats by offering free samples of protein shakes and energy drinks; the connection between the workers and customers has grown and the environment has become even more comfortable. Not only the workers, but also the people there in general are super respectful and supportive of everyone’s accomplishments. Fitness 19 is also a Westmont sanctuary with a huge number of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors showing up pretty much daily. Senior workout buddies Justin Temple and Krish Mathur have been going for 4 years and say “I love it. I don’t know where I’d be without Fitness 19!” Going to the gym 6 times a week has been the best hobby and habit I’ve developed as I continue seeing improvement in my physical and mental health.
