Athlete of the Issue: Kayla Kim

By Jupiter Polevoi

Superstar senior, Kayla Kim, is known for her perseverance and strength throughout her athletic career. Playing soccer in the winter and running hurdles in the spring, Kayla always keeps herself busy in the world of athleticism. Not only has Kayla been playing soccer for twelve years and running track for seven, but also she trains in the off-season in a program called Zero G. Kayla has had many obstacles to overcome; besides hurdles, she has been injured many times over the years. In total,  she has received three knee surgeries, but still continues to play and fight back. When I asked her to give some advice to people discouraged about their sports injuries, here’s what Kim had to say: “There’s always a chance to come back. You need to have hope, but it’s really all about the work you put in. Don’t be discouraged about slow progress and remember that it’s all about consistency.” Kim’s favorite part about soccer includes teamwork;  meanwhile, she appreciates the individuality track offers. Hailey Abdilla, one of Kayla’s soccer teammates, declared, “Kayla is a hard-worker and a dedicated athlete who encourages the team and pushes herself at every practice.” Similarly, Ian Grosch, fellow track star (and our other athlete of the issue!) stated, “She’s very good at her respective sports and a great teammate to be around! She’s committed and it’s great to have her as part of the team.” Ultimately, Kayla says that she wouldn’t have been able to persevere through all her obstacles without the support of her friends, family, and coaches.
