They’ve Done it Again!

By Cat Kemp

Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift—the perfect combination to tear your heart out of your chest. Recently the pair has released another song together, raising their total number of collaborations to four. “The Joker and the Queen” is a touching song about two people who are in love, however, they both think the other is incapable of falling for them. The song—although arguably not their best work—is still deeply touching and relatable for many people. Although when I first watched the music video for this song I was deeply underwhelmed, after doing some research and rewatching it, my opinion might have changed. The song features two young actors, who are none other than Ava Ames and Jack Lewis from the 2013 music video of “Everything Has Changed,” another Sheeran-Swift collaboration. The song and video feature a remix of the original “Joker and the Queen” that only Sheeran sang, featuring Swift showing a separate perspective of this romance, giving a certain insight that could not have been gained from just one artist. The video, however, provides even more details and meaning to the lyrics, portraying two kids moving out of their homes and going on to a new life. Both characters hold a picture frame of one another that is originally from the “Everything Has Changed” music video. The video implores viewers to imagine that the lyrics may not only apply to a relationship, but to a friendship. Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift really are geniuses, leaving even more easter eggs in the music video for viewers to find. I encourage everyone to watch this music video at least once, and see if you can notice anything more!
