Black Cats are Lucky

By Olivia Pocat

Long standing superstitions in American culture regarding black cats define these dark colored felines as unlucky. Other cultures define crossing paths with these cats as lucky, supposed to bring you good luck for life. First of all, has anyone who has crossed paths with a black cat actually been doomed to years of bad luck. No. Although you might have stubbed your toe or dropped your plate, these unlucky actions don’t result from crossing paths with a black cat. Superstitions regarding these cats tend to be good, including in Scotland and Japan where black cats are regarded as cute and lucky rather than sly and unlucky. Although their dark color and shiny, yellow eyes might make them look creepy in the dark, their sweet personalities more than make up for any “creepiness” and “unluckiness” associated with them. This whole superstition has also led to black cats having the lowest adoption rates out of any cat breed and color. Instead of relying on old myths, bust the norm and adopt a sweet black kitten who needs a home. You never know, it might even bring you luck for the rest of your life.
