Moon Child

By Avalon Kelly

Look up at the setting sun

A thousand colors turn to one

Yellow, purple, orange, pink

Now an inky black

If you focus

Maybe you’ll see

The outline of the stars

The freckles of the universe’s masterpiece

Scattered

Clustered

Constellated

Can you see them

I can

Soon the lights of earth go out

Silence

But for your breathing and the trees

And the moon illuminates your quiet face

Falling

Fast

Asleep

Amid the

Luminous darkness

Roaring silence

Of the world

At this late hour

The moon looks down from her heavenly perch

And smiles

At you

Her child

Deep in slumber
