With true grit and determination, the Westmont Cross Country team hopes to continue their winning streak this fall season. Despite CCS being canceled last year, they earned first in the Mount Hamilton Division with an undefeated record of 7-0. As the new season rolls around, all 36 runners have expressed their anticipation for it. Varsity Junior Ojas Joshi reveals he is “really excited to be able to go to larger races again, since Covid restrictions are starting to be lifted.” Returning Girls Varsity Sophomore Kiarra D’Arcangelo agrees: “I’m excited to finally have a normal season.”
New freshman Carter Cormier describes that the sport is “difficult, but with a great payoff.” Although training is extremely tough (both mentally and physically), Cross Country members often find themselves creating “long lasting friendships” while “enjoying exercise in the process” according to Ron Ernst, 2nd-year head coach. With such a fun environment, it’s no surprise that the team has 10 returning varsity runners; including 4-year Varsity members Ryan Chaudoin, Dean Dalziel, and Lily Stockmans. “With the solidification of the team as friends and runners, I know we can take our victories from last year and expand upon them this year,” Dean emphasizes. Leading the boys team are captains Ryan Chaudoin, Dean Dalziel, and Senior Akash Ranade. Taking on the role of girls’ captains are Juniors Alex Gryciuk and Avalon Kelly, and Senior Lily Stockmans. Their next meet will be October 7, at Montgomery Hill Park. Coach Ron Ernst describes the team goals to “stay healthy, develop lasting friendships, and improve race fitness” this year. FOR LUMBY!
