More Than Just a Stamp

By Maliah Grote

Stamp collecting, or philately, has attracted collectors for nearly two centuries. Since Britain introduced the first postage stamp, the Penny Black, in 1840, millions of stamps have been produced featuring everything from presidents and celebrities to animals, landmarks, and historical events.

Collectors often specialize in certain countries, time periods, or themes. Some might spend years searching for stamps featuring airplanes, while others focus on stamps from a particular decade. Collectors can organize albums using special tools such as tweezers and magnifying glasses to protect and examine the stamps.

While many stamps have little financial value, rare ones can be worth thousands or even millions of dollars. Their value can depend on rarity, condition, and printing errors.

For many collectors, the appeal isn’t about money. Each stamp has its own story and can offer a glimpse into the time and place where it was created. A stamp can seem like it is just something you stick on an envelope and forget about. To stamp collectors, it can be a piece of history worth holding onto.
