Spider-Mamdani: Hero or Menace?

By Lia O’Sullivan

Something spectacular has been stirring ever since the 2025 New York City’s mayoral elections. Zohran Mamdani, 35 year-old liberal politician, was sworn in as mayor of NYC on January 1, 2026, with over 50% of the votes. Born to Indian parents in Kampala, Uganda, temporarily residing in Cape Town, South Africa, before moving to New York at 7 years old, Mamdani has spent his life accomplishing feat after feat, eventually building up to his running for office. However, in the time since he has been elected as mayor of the Big Apple, his reputation has grown rapidly and he has even been seen and remarked as New York City’s own real-life superhero (without the mask and colorful underpants). But what sparked this sudden popularity? In this article, we will be taking a look at the ways Mamdani has addressed the city’s issues and accomplished outstanding results, and how his social media presence shaped the way citizens all over the country have grown to view him.

Mamdani has undoubtedly become one of the most influential politicians the 21st century has produced, and with this great power comes great meme-ability. With social media becoming such a vital part of the average American citizen’s everyday life, authority figures across the nation have taken their campaigns to apps like TikTok or Instagram, in hopes of better appealing to the younger demographic. Mamdani is no exception. After sifting through his and countless other related accounts, the reason for his success became clear. His personal Instagram account features conversations with other politicians, mayors, and even multiple presidents, while also shining light on real-world issues occurring in his city. This all may seem like your average boring political reel at first glance, but Mamdani’s publicity team successfully turns uninteresting legal jargon into fun, easy-to-consume content. The Doordash settlement for example, over 260,000 NYC delivery workers were discovered to have been underpaid or received tardy payments from Doordash. However, the City secured a settlement of $131.5 million—the largest worker settlement in NYC history—in order to provide workers with what they are owed. All of this information was presented with a short, funny, 33 second skit, in collaboration with the popular comedian/actor, Malik Elassal.

Furthermore, his output is not restricted to court cases or world leader meetings. Mamdani makes a point to stay grounded and in touch with the youth of America, striving for better education and building a better future for those who will come after us. Much of his content exhibits him visiting elementary schools, engaging with them and asking them a mixture of questions, ranging from silly to serious (disguised as simpler, more comprehensive inquiries). His restrictive A.I. policy, preventing students from 2K through 8th grade from using generative A.I., protects young minds from the unsupervised overconsumption of generative slop, and encourages them to build a strong imagination and efficient problem solving and critical thinking skills, without having to rely on a device.

Mamdani’s heartwarming and relaxed approach to campaign—or simply information—based content is exactly what makes him so appealing to the younger audiences. His efficiency has become the talk of the town, to the point where people compare him to the iconic Spider-Man, fighting injustices in the legal system, while also successfully battling the seemingly smaller day-to-day issues New York faces. He uses his platform to uplift and highlight the stories of NYC and does it in a way this generation deeply and truly enjoys and appreciates. Mamdani truly is the friendly neighborhood mayor America needs.
