Mastering a wide range of artistic mediums takes serious dedication, and sophomore Laura Hah makes it look effortless. From painting banners for ASB and sculpting for her 3D design class to competing in various art contests, she constantly pushes her creative boundaries. Below, she shares insights into her creative process, her favorite mediums, and what drives her passion for art.
How long have you been making art?
I’ve been doing art since I was born, but I started taking classes at around 6, and by COVID I took it more seriously.
How would you describe your art style?
I use lots of harsh paint strokes for acrylics since they are harder to blend compared to oil paints. I am working more on blending my acrylics for certain projects recently, though.
Where do you usually find inspiration for new projects?
Honestly, Pinterest is my GOAT. I do base lots of my work on my Asian culture, and sometimes I take a photo of something random on the street and sketch it out.
What’s your ultimate goal with making art?
I don’t intend to sell most of my art, but I do like putting them in art competitions, like Scholastic Art and Writing or Westmont’s Got Art.
What’s your favorite work of art you ever made?
My favorite piece has to be these flowers I painted for Mother’s Day a few years ago. That was the most favorite time I’ve had when painting with harsh lines and thinking about colors.

Do you have any advice to give?
Don’t ever say you’re “bad” at art! There are so many people in this universe who would never think about doing art because they consider themselves a “bad artist,” but there are so many different mediums and styles to have. No one has ever tried everything, so might as well get out of your comfort zone and try to be the first. Also, BE CURIOUS!
Who inspires you as an artist?
Yoshimoto Nara is my favorite artist of all time. I do take lots of inspiration from his multiple art books.
What’s your favorite color to work with?
I love to use colors one may not originally think of mixing, so in short , I love all colors.
If you were to ask me what my favorite color would be, it would be yellow.
Do you prefer working in silence, music, podcasts, or background noise?
Working in silence is the best. Since my art is very personal to me, and I wouldn’t normally want someone over my shoulder watching.
Fun Fact: I used to have a TikTok account dedicated to my art. My first viral video was of Corpse Bride watercolor with over 50k views.
