When I was little, my grandma, alongside my mom, brother, and I would take amazing adventures to Costco. Every single time we went it was the same routine…and I loved it. For some reason, these are such core memories to me! Here is the routine of 6-8 year old Penny and her Costco trips:
- First things first; plan the outing! Early in the morning, my mom would wake up my brother Benny and I to let us know that it was Costco time!
- Immediately after, we drove to pick up Grammy. She lives in the opposite direction of Costco, so this part was never fun for my mom…
- Once arrived, it was game time. My family DID NOT play about this store. When we were there, it meant business. Every single grocery item we could ever need and more—I wish I had more of a concept of money so I could have kept a record of all the receipts and how much we spent…
We always went in a circle, which meant starting in the snacky area and making our way around. The snack area was the most boring for me—I hated how long it took! Funny story about the snack section…my brother once begged my grandma to buy him a HUGE pack of gum. I’m talking like 1000 pieces. Later my mom found out that he was selling the gum at his middle school! He got in so much trouble—it was hilarious.
- My favorite section was the freezer section. I would stand in awe in front of it, waiting for the okay from my mom allowing me to enter. For whatever odd reason, I loved the smell…It smelled like a warehouse? Just like a cold version of Home Depot. Yeah…I can’t believe I am admitting all of this right now. ANYWAYS! My brother and I loved to play hide and seek in here while Grammy and my mom walked through the vegetables.
- My section came to an end…which was always the hint that it was time to go. However, we can’t leave without the final steps: grab every sample in sight (bonus points if Grammy got you extra)! Next, check out and pretend to be shocked at the high bill. And finally, grab a delicious hot dog while riding to the car on Grammy’s scooter.
Ahh… what awesome times.
