As a professional physicist, one that even the “great” Albert Einstein would envy, I am here to tell you all about the Biot-Savart and Ampère’s Laws—two of the most basic laws of physics, even toddlers can do.
The Biot-Savart Law
To start, this law was created by both Franklin Biot and Samuel Savart. While most believe these two were best friends, in reality, they were actually sworn enemies. This law is a combination of two separate laws, created to spite the other. One part, the Biot aspect, is applied to the behavior of liquid fluids—particularly with the usage of facets. Franklin Biot, not unlike Sir Issac Newton and his stroke of genius after watching an apple fall (woopie doo), received a revelation on the flow of water during a moment of particular thirst. With a parched throat, Biot realized that water flows at a consistent progression. With more pressure applied to the release of water, the flow of water will increase, or simplified into: more pressure = higher flow.
Like his mortal enemy, Samuel Savart was particularly thirsty while at school. Seeking a cure for his growing thirst, yet finding no source of such liquid gold, he began the creation of the Water Fountain. While initially a near-perfect creation, one unfortunate day in Savart’s cafeteria, a particularly brutal fistfight with a classmate, Franklin Biot, led to unfathomable annoyance and irritation. (It is crucial to understand that, within the creation of this law, there was no hatred shared between these two schoolboys, but rather an incredible rate of provocation.) As a result, Savart adjusted his invention. Now, water flows out of the fountain using Biot’s law (more pressure = higher flow) with the addition of a single piece of metal dangling into the outlet of water. This is why, now, when students go to a water fountain, the rate of expelling water is never predictable. Essentially, Samuel Savart’s Law was created specifically to counter Biot’s Law, and most importantly, the Biot-Savart Law exists to spite schoolchildren who seek water to quench their thirst, much like the two creators had years ago.
Ampère’s Law
Ampère’s Law is just as simple as the Biot-Savart Law, however works in a very different field of physics. Ampère’s Law was created by Legistan Ampère as he was moving from New Jersey to South Carolina and dealing with countless boxes filled with countless weights and sizes. In his journey of moving, Ampère was pushing a particularly heavy box and realized that the weight and amount of corners of the item’s being moved, corresponds to the difficulty of transport (and pain in your back). However, this law never really received much attention or acknowledgement for years until more people began moving and saw this law in action. Now, this is a common Law that plays a major role in most people’s lives, especially those who make a living in helping people move.
