On May 1st, Zara Larsson released the deluxe version of her album Midnight Sun, Girls Trip, and so, as an avid fan of Zara Larsson’s music, I’ve decided to rate each song from the deluxe album below! Also, just for context, Girls Trip is made up of remixes of the original songs off of Midnight Sun, so if you see any song titles that seem familiar, that’s why!
“Midnight Sun – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artist: PinkPantheress
Rating: 7/10
Why: The vocals don’t seem to match up with the beat super well during the chorus, so I sadly have to give it a low rating. I do really like PinkPantheress’ verse on this remix (which makes sense, considering she’s the one who produced the remix), which is why I didn’t lower the rating any more than I already did.
Would I add it to my playlist? Probably not.
“Blue Moon – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artist: Kehlani
Rating: 9/10
Why: Unlike the “Midnight Sun” remix, Zara actually rerecorded her vocals on this remix—and she changed the lyrics up too! I also love the instrumental on this song; it’s basic, but it goes great with both Zara and Kehlani’s vocals!
Would I add it to my playlist? Yes!
“Pretty Ugly – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artists: JT, Margo XS
Rating: 6.5/10
Why: The instrumental and intensity of sound effects aren’t my cup of tea, and this remix really doesn’t show off Zara’s vocals at all.
Would I add it to my playlist? No.
“Girl’s Girl – Girls Trip”
Featured Artist: Emilia
Rating: 7.5/10
Why: Again, very autotune heavy, not my favorite. However, I do like the instrumental for this remix a lot more than the one for the “Pretty Ugly” remix, which is why I’m giving it a higher rating. I also think this song is super catchy, and I honestly mess with it!
Would I add it to my playlist? Maybe…I’ll have to listen to it more.
“Crush – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artist: Eli
Rating: 8.5/10
Why: I really like the beat of this song, and its overall vibe! I also love how it showcases Zara’s vocals. I do like the original version a bit more, which is why I’m giving this remix an 8.5/10!
Would I add it to my playlist? Yup!
“Eurosummer – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artist: Shakira
Rating: 7.5/10
Why: I love Shakira, and I love Zara, but something about their voices together throws me off. I also prefer the original beat compared to the remixed version.
Would I add it to my playlist? Perhaps…I need to listen to it some more.
“Hot & Sexy – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artist: Tyla
Rating: 10/10
Why: I absolutely adore Zara and Tyla’s voices together—they mesh so well! I also love the instrumental; it’s super similar to the original one, but with some slight alterations that make it even better!!
Would I add it to my playlist? Absolutely!
“The Ambition – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artists: Madison Bear, BAMBII
Rating: 7/10
Why: I’m not a huge fan of the techno-like beat; however, I do love Madison’s feature on this remix, which is why I’m not rating this song too low.
Would I add it to my playlist? Probably not.
“Saturn’s Return – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artists: Malibu, Helena Gao
Rating: 9/10
Why: This song has a super nice and chill vibe, and I love the remixed instrumental, as well as the combination of Zara’s vocals with the features! I also think it’s super cool how the song’s outro has a speech (presumably by Helena Gao) in Chinese, and how the outro itself lasts a good two minutes—it’s been a while since I’ve heard a song with an actual outro!
Would I add it to my playlist? Yes!
“Puss Puss – Girls Trip:”
Featured Artist: Robyn
Rating: 8/10
Why: I like the instrumental and vocals, but I like the original version more. I also don’t love some parts of the feature too much.
Would I add it to my playlist? I’m thinking about it…leaning towards yes.
