When you think of 2008, you might think of the seniors graduating this year, or maybe you’d think of nothing at all, but I’ll always think of Taylor Swift’s record breaking sophomore album Fearless being released. At only 17 years old, Swift debuted her first album Taylor Swift, which had boosted the popstar from an unknown high school student into fame and fortune.
Utilizing her teenage perspective, Swift included themes of high school love and heartbreak, using fairytale imagery to manifest her emotions to life. Two of the five singles she released with the album became worldwide phenomena recognizable by the average person. “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me” emphasize the feeling of teenage love and expertly capture the highs and lows of human emotions through her visual storytelling.
Throughout 2009, Fearless became the United States’ best selling album, selling over 3.217 copies. But it also captured the hearts of those internationally. The album peaked at the top of charts in Canada and New Zealand and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Fearless also earned Swift her first Album of the Year award and Best Country Album at the 2010 Grammys. And it didn’t stop there.
In 2019, after a dispute with her recording label Big Machine Records, Swift began to re-record her old masters. During this, the record label had sold her music released between 2006 and 2017 to new owner Scooter Braun. Swift stated she tried to purchase her music back, but was met with unfavorable conditions, so she opted to re-record her first six albums and own the masters herself. The first of them, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), marked a significant turning point in her career.
Since then, Swift has released re-recordings of her hit albums Red, Speak Now, and 1989, all including “(Taylor’s Version)” following the album title to signify her ownership of the records. In 2025, Swift bought back her masters, stating it was the work of those who made the Eras Tour the global sensation it turned into. So while often overlooked, Swift’s Fearless record fundamentally altered the course of her career, leading to her own unrenowned success and individuality.
