The resurgence of Y2K fashion in the past few years—low-rise jeans, graphic baby tees, tinted sunglasses, animal print, and henley tops among the most popular, if you’re not familiar—largely represents the 1997 to 2005 period of trends. But what about the few years after, when this year’s graduating class of 2026 was born? Some of the stylistic choices fashionistas made in 2008 were definitely highly questionable—comfort was not the theme of this year. Regardless, you might also find that your day-to-day outfits have some surprisingly 2008-esque vibes. Here are some of the worst and best fashion trends of 2008:
- Extra-Wide Waist Belts

All the trendy girls in 2008 sported chunky and bold, ultra-eye-catching waist belts that were meant to define the waist like a corset, and they weren’t functional or comfortable, to say the least. Rather than serving the usual purpose of securing a pair of pants, these belts were largely used ornamentally—that is, if you weren’t wearing high-waisted bottoms, which brings me to my next point.
- VERY Short High-Waisted Shorts

Please, please keep this atrocious trend away from me. Not only does the waist look extremely tight and impossible to move in, but the cut of the shorts—was wedgie-maxxing the goal here?
- Liquid Leggings

Another miss—despite their name, these synthetic, plasticky coated leggings offered zero breathability, zero stretch, and even squeaked on the few divas who were able to perform on stage in them, like Rihanna and Miley Cyrus.
- Shocking Colors

Yet again leaning into the world of big and bold, 2008 embraced bright purples, neon pinks, and eye-catching teals. We’ve been seeing a resurgence of this one in recent years, even in ultra-popular brands like Brandy Melville and Hollister. Vibrant hues are probably the most wearable and relevant trend on this list, and a wonderful form of self expression!
- (Ripped?!) Skinny Jeans

We as a society have agreed that skinny jeans are uncomfortable and in general, unflattering enough. I don’t think adding rips helped, even if indie sleaze was a main aesthetic in 2008.
- Headbands

Inspired by Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl, preppy headbands was an easy way to add volume to hair—functional, yet timelessly trendy whether it’s a preppy or sporty aesthetic. Boho headbands that sat lower, near the forehead, were also a popular choice.
