The Cranberries established themselves as having an instantly recognizable sound thanks to Dolores O’Riordan’s signature vocal style; through just a couple of seconds of listening, you will know you are listening to The Cranberries.
The Cranberries’ first studio album Everybody Else is Doing It So Why Can’t We? initially did not receive a tremendous amount of attention; nevertheless, it became one of many bands making waves after 1993 due in large part to the emergence of songs such as “Linger” and “Dreams” as radio hits throughout Europe and especially in North America and thus propelled the band to worldwide fame.
The band quickly followed up with No Need to Argue, their second effort, which contained such songs as their biggest commercial success—”Zombie.” Unlike their previous releases featuring predominantly dreamier elements, “Zombie” featured more distorted guitars with greater weight attributed to them. This was largely due to the band addressing the violence associated with The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
The band continued to release subsequent albums into the early 2000s, including To the Faithful Departed and Bury the Hatchet that allowed them to continue to reach more fans, but dissatisfaction associated with their commercialism led them to take a break during. They reunited years later, and their final album, In the End, was released after O’Riordan’s death in 2018.
What has separated The Cranberries among their contemporaries has been the unique and emotion-filled qualities that shape both their overall sound and musical style. Musically, their sound incorporates a mixture of alternative rock along with subtle references to Celtic musical styles, and O’Riordan’s vocals create an atmospheric and raw, almost plaintive, tone that runs through nearly all of the Cranberries’ material. Lyrics vary greatly as they often touch upon both soft, nostalgic feelings of love and heavier themes like tragedy, death, or conflict. As a result, classic tracks such as “Dreams,” “Linger,” and “Zombie” constantly provide listeners with a lasting impression.
