Swimming in Fries?

By Gio Arteaga

For this issue, several writers including myself have decided to embark on a treacherous journey of getting a secret task, and actually completing said task. For my secret task, I was given—by another random journalism student—the honor of tasting and reviewing 6 different french fries and raking them. For each restaurant I went to, I gave it a general score, a taste score, an accessibility score, and a “Wwould I buy again?”’ score. So buckle down for this lovely (very in-depth) review of 6 different french fry restaurants!

No. 1: Taco Bell

Score: 10/10

Taste Score: 9.9/10

Accessibility Score: 10/10

Would I buy it again? YES

Starting off incredibly strong, we have Taco Bell’s signature Nacho Fries. Now listen…This is biased because my peer Laura Lipcsei and I go to Taco Bell—perat her request—quite often, so it is an acquired love. Universally, however, Nacho Fries are very accepted  and loved by the masses. Overall, however, simply perfection! From the coating on the outside, to the side of nacho cheese sauce that comes with the fries (of which Lipcsei gets an extra of), the delicacy and overall composition of nacho fries are so throughout and DIVINE. Critics of these heavenly fries argue that they get repetitive over time, and to an extent I see that argument—hence the 0.1 point deduction on taste—but it’s such a go-to snack that’s decently affordable with a large fry running you around $4 (again with a free side of nacho cheese sauce) which in my book is a win! Overall, if you’re not allergic to wheat, gluten, milk, and soy, cough cough Mia Hanuska, then giving these fries a chance is a must and therefore earns it’s 10/10!

No. 2: McDonalds

Score: 6.5/10

Taste Score: 6/10

Accessibility Score: 10/10

Would I buy it again? Yes…

YES YES, I do indeed have a picture of me having a mountain of McDonalds nuggets and french fries in front of me, but they really aren’t all that…Now when you’re tired or with a group of people—maybe after a football game or a hangout—going to McDonalds is kind of a given and is pretty candid. But people who go to McDonalds consistently, despite having access to healthier options, will always surprise me, and frankly disappoint me. Eating these lifeless strips of alleged potato brings back childhood memories of going to get a happy meal and watching drive-in movies with my family, but eating them now is a little gross after a while. The fries themselves are a little soggy and after only eating a few made me feel really full. Continuing on, the first few fries were good, I was decently hungry which made looking at them almost painful; However, after eating an entire medium, these alleged french fries made my mouth feel very bland and left a starchy feeling coupled with an oil after taste. Honestly speaking, having these fries after the CEO called their new burger a “pProduct” instead of food makes me a little skeptical, however, for their ease and accessibility—seeing you can buy these alleged fries literally anywhere—they get a mid-score of 6.5.

No. 3: Canes Fries

Score: 8/10

Taste Score: 8.5/10

Accessibility Score: 6/10

Would I buy it again? Maybe?

This one is going to be based on memory just because it’s been a second since I’ve visited Canes. Looking at their incredibly wide selection of food options that consist of chicken, toast, and fries, it’s almost overwhelming choosing an option. But with the fries coming with every meal, it makes this already impossible decision so much easier! The fries themselves are very good; they have a nice texture, and are decently crispy. However, they get a minor deduction because the fries are so incredibly salty AND because the nearest canes is around 30 minutes away which is incredibly inconvenient. So for these reasons raising canes crinkle cut fries are an 8/10

No. 4: Cchick Ffil Aa

Score: 8.5/10

Taste Score: 9/10

Accessibility Score: 8/10

Would I buy it again? Yes

Chick fil a fries are delectable to say the least. Their

No. 5: Dairy Queen

Score: 6/10

Taste Score: 5/10

Accessibility Score: 7/10

Would I buy it again? Maybe?

No. 6: Five Guys

Score: 8.5/10

Taste Score: 9/10

Accessibility Score: 8/10

Would I buy it again? Yes?
