Lady Bird is a film released in 2017 by A24, directed by Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women, Frances Ha) and starring Saoirse Ronan as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson. Lady Bird is set in Sacramento, California, around 2003. Following Christine, an intrepid and rebellious seventeen-year old girl who goes by the name “Lady Bird” as she comes of age and navigates her relationship with her mother, and the struggle to find out who she really is. I understand and adore this like no other coming-of-age film. As a seventeen-year-old girl in Californian suburbia, Lady Bird and all the complexities and discoveries she undergoes strike a personal chord with me, and also give me a strange sense of ambition that pursuing my dreams is possible.
