Kirk Vasquez, wearing #8 on his back, was the core of the Westmont baseball team. His dedication and leadership set him apart from anyone else. He left a lasting impression on both teammates and coaches, making him a true role model within the program. Although he tragically passed away in 2019, the influence he had continues to shape players today. Besides his talent on the field, Kirk stood out for his positive spirit, always treating others with kindness, respect, and genuine care. The KV8 Memorial Foundation was made in his honor to support young athletes who share his love for the game. The foundation continues to reflect the passion Kirk brought to baseball. At Westmont, his memory is honored through a meaningful tradition: each year, a senior player is selected to wear the #8 jersey. This honor is given to someone who represents the same selflessness, determination, and leadership that defined Kirk. This season, that player is Kainoa Raub, who embodies the qualities that made Kirk so impactful.
Kainoa is a well-loved senior at Westmont who plays football and baseball. His leadership and determination qualities set him apart from others, much like Kirk. During Kainoa’s freshman year, his brother, Kimo Raub, received the #8 legacy. This left Kainoa determined to be like his brother, and Kirk. Kainoa started playing baseball when he was just four years old, and his love for the game has not stopped since then. He has taken part in the baseball community for all four years at Westmont, as well as spending the last two on varsity. When asked to describe Kainoa, friend and teammate Brayden Casillas says, “I’ve played with Kainoa for over 14 years, and he’s always been a positive, supportive teammate and one of the most genuine people I know. No one deserves it more than him.” Kainoa truly embodies the values of #8 with every step he takes.
