Conflict in the Middle East

By Cameron Kobara

On February 28, 2026 the United States and Israel launched air strike attacks against Iranian military targets. According to United State officials, the attacks were aimed to destroy Iranian military infrastructure, missiles, and disable Iran’s nuclear program. President Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as other world leaders have claimed that Iran’s growing missile supply as well as ambitions regarding a nuclear program, posed an ‘imminent’ threat to the United States and their allies. Through this reasoning the United States claimed that attacking first was a necessary step in preventing further development of Iranian nuclear weapons.

However, this reasoning for the conflict has been heavily challenged. Experts claim there is no concrete evidence to support that Iran was close to building nuclear weapons or if they were planning any attack on the United States. The International Atomic Energy Agency has stated there was no structured program to create nuclear weapons. Critics of the U.S have argued that although Iran’s military programs could be seen as a long-term concern, did not pose an immediate threat to the United States, and the reason for this conflict could be for other reasons including control over certain resources, regime change, or simply supporting Israel’s security.

Since the start of this conflict both sides have launched multiple counter attacks across the middle east. Iran has fired missiles at U.S and allied bases, while the U.S have carried out thousands of strikes against Iran, even leading to the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian officials have made claims stating that the United States have attacked civilian populations, including an all girls elementary school killing at least 160 people, most of whom were children. Investigations conducted by the United States suggest that it may have been possible that these attacks were caused by U.S. forces, however, the Pentagon says the incident is still under investigation and they “do not target civilians on purpose”

As war continues to wage in the middle east the situation remains unstable with no obvious or clear outcome.
