A New Face for Homeland Security

By Sophia Doan

On March 5, 2026, President Donald Trump fired Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary. The decision to remove Noem set a precedent, making her “the first Cabinet secretary to leave her post and capping off a tumultuous year” (nbcnews.com). Noem was previously sworn in after a 59-34 Senate vote on January 25, 2025.

Regarding the position, Trump announced his nomination for Oklahoman senator Markwayne Mullin. On his social media platform, Trump called Mullin “a MAGA Warrior, and former undefeated professional MMA fighter, Markwayne truly gets along with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda. Markwayne will make a spectacular Secretary of Homeland Security” (kpbs.org).

Noem’s controversial decision making often sparked mass political debate. The Department of Homeland Security vastly and strictly implemented the Trump administration’s immigration policies throughout her time as Secretary. Recently, the DHS and Noem faced backlash for the methods in which they handled an ICE enforcement controversy that killed two U.S. citizens.

In her congressional hearings, Noem also received questioning regarding her role in the “200 million dollar ad campaign she oversaw that urged anyone in the U.S. illegally to deport voluntarily” (nbcnews.com). In response, Noem asserted that Trump approved the campaign, which the White House later denied.

Although Noem will no longer serve as the Homeland Security Secretary, Trump announced her transition to taking over the role of “Envoy for The Shield of Americans,” describing the position as “one that will lead our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere” (nbcnews.com).

Overall, Noem’s removal fosters significant change within the Department of Homeland Security. Throughout her time serving as Secretary, her decision making constantly impacted immigration and policy implementation in the United States. Her actions and words constantly sparked controversy and political debate, and surely the future of the position will continue to be closely inspected by the media.
