Reminders That You’re Real

By Wesley Adams

Climbing trees and fences
Peeling oranges, feeling sticky
Washing my hands and seeing dirty soap drops,
Lay in the grass until I’m itchy.
Puddles that come with me, through the holes of my shoes,
Reminders that I’m real and living
Lucky to have so much to lose.

My first go around I had no desire
To go out or be embraced.
My second go around was forbidden, I could never see her face to face.
For so long I hoped and dreamed that something real would come my way
Then one day you turned that corner towards me,
You’re real, and here to stay.

Swapping backpacks on the way home, to help you with the weight.
Sacrificing sleep for memories, and hearing what you have to say.
Skating home at early hours, ’cause I stayed with you too late,
In your room are dried out flowers, the ones you got on our first date.
Running with the you to our bus stop,
Holding hands in car backseats,
Watching our favorite shows together,
Taking turns talking when we read.
Sharing earbuds and our music,
And laughing at dumb things.
Head on head on shoulder,
Soothing scratches, massaging.
Sharing the food we get together,
Watching The Office on DVD,
Stalking each other’s socials,
Making your face turn pink.
Taking photos of you that you won’t like,
Keeping you warm when there’s no heat,
Sharing clothes and coffee,
Picking off the hairs you leave on me.
Falling asleep mid-conversation,
Learning to understand you,
Helping you do the same for me,
Trying to remember each other’s interests,
Adopting a plush guinea pig.
Growing with each other,
Celebrating that we’ve come this far,
Celebrating Christmas with your family,
Going trick or treating,
Seeing stars.

Reminders that you’re real and with me, through whatever comes our way,
Reminders that we’re more than good,
Unwavering through rain.
Wish for you on every 11:11
Maybe I’m slightly superstitious,
Thankful for reminders that you’re real,
When every day with you
Feels fictitious;
Questioning if I’m awake,
So next time that I’m there with you,
Remind me one more way.
