Marty Supreme Review

By Sabrina Staringer

Marty Supreme is an A24-produced film directed by Josh Safdie and stars Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, and Tyler, the Creator. Josh Safdie is best known for co-directing Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019) with his younger brother, Benny Safdie. Marty Supreme is the first solo project of Josh Safdie, and he proves that he is and will continue to be an amazing storyteller and filmmaker even after the split from his brother. Marty Supreme is, on the surface, a film about ping-pong, though ping-pong is only the first layer of the story. Marty Mauser—played excellently by Chalamet—dreams big about being the best ping pong player in the world. But his methods for achieving his far-flung dreams include manipulating and conning those around him, including family who don’t take him seriously. Marty Supreme is a carefully crafted film about ping-pong, but beneath it lies the American Dream and the nightmares that arise when it is pursued.
