As the winter sports season picks up its pace, the Westmont winter guard aims to continue their upward momentum. Following an impressive track record of first-place finishes and earning the title of Scholastic Regional AAA Champion at the California Color Guard Circuit last March, the team has high expectations for the upcoming competition, scheduled for February 7 at Independence High School. All 14 members strive to improve during thrice-weekly practices, sharpening their dance skills and learning new tricks–and of course, bonding over bagels and snacks during downtimes. This issue, hear from Captain Daria Egorova on the team’s outlook for the upcoming events.
What are your goals this year?
“I’m really excited to learn baton and teach it to other members, and also try cool tricks on weapon and flag that aren’t in the show, for fun! My goal for the team is to hopefully get a score of 80 or higher at champs!”
What’s your favorite part of being in this team?
“My favorite part is having inside jokes with all my friends, and getting to do makeup together during competition days, because we always have so much fun.”
Any pre-performance rituals or traditions?
“As a team, we say, ‘suck now so you don’t suck later,’ and suck on a tictac right before we go and perform!”
What made you want to join winter guard?
“I really wanted to spin rifle and saber, and the flags looked really pretty.”
